Our Programs & Services
The Institute for Research for Social Justice and Action (IRSJA) delivers a multi-faceted approach to creating sustainable change in marginalized communities. Through community-based programs, storytelling and advocacy, financial support, and online education, IRSJA equips individuals and organizations with the tools to lead, heal, and transform society. Below are the primary program categories, followed by detailed descriptions of each initiative.

Community-Based Programs
These programs work directly with individuals and communities, addressing local challenges through leadership development, restorative practices, and empowerment.

Participants develop leadership skills, co-teach courses, and lead community projects, creating lasting impact through advocacy and collaboration.

Through research projects, participants address systemic issues and contribute to justice-centered policies.

• Be the Changemakers: Social Justice in Action Program: Empowers youth with the tools to address social issues through activism, entrepreneurship, and civic engagement. Participants develop critical thinking, leadership skills, and the confidence to drive meaningful change.
• Restorative Practices and Healing Program: Provides trauma-informed care and restorative justice practices to support the healing and reintegration of justice-impacted individuals. Through healing circles, peer support, and mentorship, participants address trauma, rebuild relationships, and foster personal growth.
Programs:
Storytelling and Advocacy Programs
Our storytelling platform uses documentaries to educate, empower, and influence policy through authentic stories of transformation. These films amplify the voices of individuals impacted by systemic injustice, fostering awareness, empathy, and action. Each documentary highlights journeys of healing, advocacy, and personal growth, inspiring audiences to push for meaningful change.
Set Her Free: The Fight for Justice for Domestic Violence Survivors
This film documents the struggle to pass legislation supporting women incarcerated for actions rooted in the trauma of domestic violence. It follows the push for New Jersey’s Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act, a law aimed at reforming sentencing for survivors whose trauma shaped their crimes. Through interviews and powerful storytelling, the film shares the personal journeys of formerly incarcerated survivors, their experiences with the justice system, and their efforts to advocate for others still imprisoned, such as Natasha White. Set Her Free raises awareness of the deep connection between trauma and incarceration and calls on lawmakers and communities to create meaningful systemic reform.
One Hood: Breaking the Cycle of Violence:
One Hood chronicles the transformation of formerly incarcerated individuals into community leaders and violence interrupters working to prevent gun violence and rebuild trust in their neighborhoods. The film follows their journey through Kean University’s Community Practitioner certification program, where they train in restorative practices and trauma-informed care alongside university students. Through candid moments and real-life challenges, One Hood shows how these credible messengers use their experiences to break cycles of violence, influence policy, and inspire healing. Their stories demonstrate the power of personal growth and leadership in reducing recidivism and fostering safer communities. Both documentaries reflect our platform’s mission of using storytelling to promote healing and drive policy change, highlighting the resilience of individuals who overcome trauma and become catalysts for transformation.
Programs:
Financial Support Programs
The Financial Support Programs provide critical funding, mentorship, and resources to empower grassroots organizations and small nonprofits, helping them build capacity, maintain essential services, and create long-term sustainability. These programs address the financial and operational challenges many organizations face, ensuring they can continue their vital work in communities.
The IRSJA Micro Grant and Sub-Awardee Program:
allocates $1 million in grants and sub-awards to grassroots organizations. This funding ensures that smaller, community-driven initiatives—often overlooked by larger funding streams—have the financial support needed to grow, expand their services, and strengthen their infrastructure. The program focuses on empowering organizations that address systemic issues such as poverty, violence prevention, and social justice, amplifying their impact and ensuring they thrive.
The Small Nonprofit Sustainability Fund:
offers grants of up to $25,000 to cover operational costs, ensuring that small nonprofits can maintain essential services during periods of financial instability. This program recognizes that many nonprofits struggle with day-to-day expenses, such as staffing, rent, and program delivery, which are critical to their survival.
By providing this financial lifeline, the fund helps organizations navigate challenges and remain resilient in times of uncertainty.
The Capacity Building Training Program:
equips nonprofits with the knowledge, mentorship, and resources they need to improve operational efficiency and secure long-term funding. The program provides practical training on fundraising strategies, grant writing, leadership development, and financial management. Through mentorship from experienced professionals, nonprofits gain the tools and confidence to build sustainable operations, scale their impact, and enhance their ability to serve their communities effectively.
Together, these financial support programs foster sustainability and growth for grassroots organizations and small nonprofits, ensuring they continue to be powerful forces for positive change in their communities.
